In 2006, Gavin claimed his first national title, he won the primary boys (age 8) long jump at the AAU Junior Olympic National Championships. The AAU JO meet is the largest and most competitive youth meet held in the USA. Gavin also placed 8th in the nation in the 100 meters. In 2007 he jumped 14'-7" which was the top 9 yr old jump in the country for the year.

2007 (age 9): AAU Junior Olympic's lead leg of the 4x100 relay placing 6th in the country and 4th at the USATF national meet. A country leading 14'7" in the long jump
